Makeup Favourites : Brushes

IMG_3761first photo

I’m not a professional makeup artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have an unhealthy love for cosmetics which, over time, has allowed me to definitely improve my makeup technique and application. One thing I have learnt for sure is that your makeup tools are just as important as the actual makeup. I only really started to wear makeup into my second year at University (aged 19), and I was partial to the good old hand-application, and most definitely only owned about 2 or 3 brushes! Safe to say my collection of tools has evolved quite nicely, and now I actually love getting all my brushes out and cleaning them!! When you start buying makeup storage boxes just for your tools (waheyy for acrylic storage!), you know you’re becoming a pro! Here are my favourite brushes that I am using at the moment.

Foundation, Cream, Base and Concealer

1.  Sigma Flat Kabuki Brush – F80
2.  Real Techniques Expert Face Brush
3.  Real Techniques Buffing Brush
4.  Real Techniques Stippling Brush
5.  Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush

I tend to mix it up a little when it comes to choosing a brush to apply my base and it really depends on what I am putting on. I use my Sigma Kabuki brush to apply my Bobbi Brown Moisture Rich Foundation (in Honey) as I find that it blends a little of the product so well even for medium to full coverage. The Real Techniques Expert Face Brush does a similar job. I LOVE my Real Techniques Stippling Brush, because it is so versatile. I use it for anything fluid-based. It gives a flawless, defined finish and I particularly love using it to apply my Smashbox BB Cream (Medium) or Laura Mercier Tinited Moisturiser (Tan). I use my Real Techniques Buffing Brush to actually blend my makeup together, for example when I apply my Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat as a highlighter and concealer, this brush is great for blending, and similarly does a great job for contouring. I also use this brush for any powder foundation. The Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush is great for more precision, and I like to use this brush for my concealer. I often use my finger for concealer under my eye when applying the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, but sometimes it is nice to use this brush too.

Blush, Bronze and Contouring

3.
Real Techniques Contour Brush

This Blush Brush by Real Techniques is fabulous!! It is big, soft with synthetic bristles and adds the perfect plush finishing touch to your makeup. I find it so easy to use and it adds perfect definition. The Daniel Sandler Waterbrush is a gem creation. I love using liquid blushes such as Benetint and the Daniel Sandler Watercolour Fluid Blushers and this brush is specifically designed for liquid blushes, and allows you to build up colour evenly on your cheeks and cheekbones. The Real Techniques Contour Brush is perfectly sized to add that contour just under your cheekbones to really define them. You can use it with specific contouring kits but I actually use my MAC Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden to build up a natural looking contour and it works quite nicely.

Eyes and Detailing

1.  Real Techniques Detailer Brush
2.  Urban Decay Naked Palette Shadow Brushes
3.  Real Techniques Shading Brush

I don’t have a major eye brush collection. I often find that I do actually use my fingers a lot to load colour onto my eyelids and then use my Real Techniques Shading Brush to blend colours together. I love the Urban Decay Naked Palettes and the brushes that come with them are great! I often use the brushes that come with all the palettes I have because I actually find them very good and particularly with the Urban Decay Palette Brushes, they are double-sided so you can easily create specific looks and add definition. When I have done heavier eye makeup, particularly a smokey eye, my Real Techniques Detailer Brush is great for using concealer to create a defined edge to the eye.

Real Techniques brushes are a staple in my collection. I absolutely love the range and versatility of these brushes and they haven’t failed me! They are also affordable which is a bonus. Sigma is a brand that I crave!! I’m saving up for the whole range of Sigma brushes, because my Kabuki Brush is my favourite of them all, the bristles are soft and it creates a smooth and flawless, natural-looking finish. I have to say that building up your collection of makeup brushes is a process! I tried many brushes before finding ones that I really really liked, and it is important that if you are going to invest in them, that you keep them clean and in good condition!
