My Guide To Looking After Your Skin On Holiday

When we are travelling we tend to forget a little about our skincare! Particularly when going to really hot countries and having beach-like holidays, we just want to get bronzed. Most tend to forget that you can still get that sun-kissed look by keeping your skin safe too! Sun cream itself isn’t going to stop you from tanning, so it’s essential to keep your skin protected and healthy whilst away to give yourself the best chance of looking exactly how you want to from your holiday, and feeling good about it!

So if you want a nice glowing pair of bronzed sausage legs the healthy way, here are my 5 top tips for looking after your skin on holiday:

Keep hydrated

By this, I mean drink plenty of water. Depriving your body of hydrating fluids is going to have undesirable effects on your skin. Drinking plenty of water will keep your skin looking plump and clear as it allows toxins to be washed out from your body. Drinking excessive alcohol on holiday (which is obviously a given for many) can dehydrate your skin, so make sure you are recovering well from boozing sessions by drinking lots of water. Hydration also prevents things like sunstroke, which is never great on holiday.

Let your skin breathe!

We all want to look fabulous on holiday but one of the best things you can do for skin especially when you’re out in the sun, is actually let your skin breathe and get some sun. The exposure to vitamin D will help your skin and also has healing properties. I don’t mean over expose your skin, but try to get some rays and don’t always cover up with makeup. If you’re in the pool or going into the sea, wearing makeup can really irritate your skin causing redness and breakouts. In addition to this, you sweat whilst in the sun. Wearing makeup, particularly foundation, is creating a film over your skin trapping all this sweat which can clog up your pores and cause inevitable breakouts. Give your skin a break and you’ll notice your skin condition will improve greatly.

Wear SPF

Now I know I have just said let your skin breathe and allow vitamin D in, but over exposure in the sun can damage your skin cells. Apply an SPF moisturiser on holiday to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Apply suncream to the rest of your body and try not to bask in tanning oils that don’t contain SPF too much. You don’t want to burn!

Carry on your beauty routine

Just because you’re on holiday, doesn’t mean you should forget your really good beauty routine that you use back home. Whenever you have the opportunity, cleanse, tone and moisturise. Cleansing in particular is really important, even if it is a quick cleansing wipe job. Keep your skin as clean as possible so you can really benefit from the holiday air and a sun-kissed look.

Hydrate your skin

While you spend the days in the sun, make sure you keep your skin well hydrated. Wear aftersun in the evenings after sun exposure (I recommend ones with aloe vera in it) to cool and hydrate your skin. After shower, pool and beach time, apply moisturising lotion to your body. Hydrating your skin in this way will also keep your sun-kissed holiday radiance up aswell, making it look as natural and healthy as possible. At night, wear a moisturising overnight mask or apply a balm so your skin repairs and protects itself throughout the night and stays soft, supple and hydrated.

So those are my top 5 beauty tips for holiday skincare! I hope you find them useful!
