Homemade : Sugar wax

There is nothing more annoying than constant hair removal in the summer because you want to get your legs out! Waxing is great because it lasts longer and the finish is much better. Continuous waxing over the years can stunt hair growth as you are constantly removing from the hair follicle, and as a result, over time, hair naturally becomes finer. One downside however is the expense of waxing… ahh on goes the list of perils of being a woman! Here is a really simple recipe to homemade honey wax, using 3 trusty ingredients (including my very favourite ingredient)!

You will need:
– Sugar (I usually use white sugar because it is easier to notice the colour change when making) – 2 cups
– Lemon juice – 1/4 cup (freshly squeezed is better)
– Water – 1/4 cup
– A pot for cooking the wax
– Glass jar or container/bowl to hold the finished wax (or a container that the mixture can be reheated in)

What to do:

1. On a medium heat stove, place the sugar, water and lemon juice in a pot.

2. Keep stirring the mixture constantly, and you will see it start to heat up  and bubble. Sugar burns very easily so make sure you keep stirring the mixture. I recommend using a wooden spoon for this.IMG_8458edit

3. Continue stirring until the mixture is bubbling and starting to turn a brownish/ caramel colour. By this point reduce the heat to low. The ideal mixture should be a dark brown colour and syrupy in texture. If you use brown sugar, it may be a good idea to use a candy thermometer to check the temperature. Once the mixture reaches about 260 degrees fahrenheit, the mixture is ready.IMG_8459edit

4. Once ready, move the mixture very quickly to your jar. Set this jar aside to cool to room temperature. It usually takes around an hour to cool. You can reheat it whenever you need it.IMG_8462editOnce the wax has cooled down, it is ready to use. Using a spatula or even a butter knife, apply the wax to your skin in the direction of hair growth. Using wax paper strips or pieces of cloth, press down onto the wax and pull off in the opposite direction to hair growth. Make sure you pull close to the skin.

Skin care
The great thing about the mixture is the natural ingredients that you can find readily in your kitchen. It is so easy to make and completely inexpensive. Sugar waxing has many benefits for the skin, being an organic mixture. The sugar and lemon exfoliate the skin and provide moisturisation leaving your skin feeling really soft and silky. The lemon is also effective in reducing irritation to the skin that may result during waxing. The mixture is also less sticky and so easy to just wash away if it does get anywhere!

I hope you enjoy this recipe for sugar wax! Try it out! It’s so simple!
