25 and Goodbye to 2015…

Can you believe this year is over!?? It has seriously flown by and we’re about to welcome the new year already! So it’s about that time where I sit back and reflect on the year, my learnings, accomplishments, difficult times but mainly the memories. This past year has been a really busy one, but also an enlightening one for me and I have had so many incredible opportunities come to life in 2015. 2015 was also the year I hit the big 25 and it’s strange how much that actually affects you as you start to realise you ain’t young anymore! I’ve made a pact to myself to do at least three things that I’ve never done before by the time I turn 26 and I encourage you to do the same, however old you are! I was super depressed about turning 25 but I’ve realised I’m in a position to do so many of the things I’ve always wanted to do… so I’m going to start doing them!

I always ask people around this time, ‘what’s been your peak of the year and what’s been your pitfall’? So I’m going to sum up my 2015 and reflect over what has been a pretty good year for me. So here’s what I learnt in 2015.

Do yourself

It’s sounds like a right old cliché but I couldn’t agree with this more. This year I’ve learnt just how important it is to make yourself happy and focus on yourself. There’s a saying which is ‘if you don’t love yourself, how do you expect someone else to love you’ and although that sounds quite crude, it’s actually quite true. Throughout the year I spent so much time doing things that I really wanted to do, connecting and re-connecting with people I really wanted to spend time with and also took the time to build and better myself. Focussing on yourself doesn’t make you selfish, it means that you take the time to make yourself happy and this radiates for miles. I’ve learnt the importance of bettering yourself and doing as much as you can to go further. Having started a new job this year, my dream job even, I’ve learnt that opportunities present themselves when you least expect it and when they do, make the absolute most of them. As Justin Bieber would say, love yourself.

Surround yourself with the right people

I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by the people I have in my life. From my family to my friends to my work team. I have people in my life that I love and trust and feel so blessed to have them. It’s so not easy to stop and remember everybody through your busy schedule, but I love that people in my life are positive and understanding, and I’ve realised how important it is to remember things that people do to help you in your life. I’ve learnt that positivity is key and this radiates, surrounding yourself with positivity makes all the difference, grudges are stupid and life is too short to hold on to things that don’t matter. I definitely think I’ve been guilty in the past of holding on to things, but this year in particular I have learnt the value of letting things go and focussing on all the good stuff. You can’t please everybody but I’ve seen that relationships worth having, don’t take lots of effort and can get through anything. I’ve realised that people can come and go from your life, people change and people move on, but the important thing is to worry about what you’re doing, and focus on doing the right thing or as best you can. I encourage you to cherish those in your life who really matter to you and that support you no matter what. That being said, spend as much time with these people as you can and show them how much they mean to you. Life is too short to not let that happen.

Be thankful, grateful and give back

This goes without saying every year, but I have really learnt the value in a lot of things. Cherish the people in your life, you can never have too many people in your life, and really be thankful for that. I feel totally blessed that I have some amazing people in my life that support me and guide me through difficult situations but also who are there to share a girly night with chatting about boys and stupidness over 3 glasses of wine. I live for those moments and the laughs, and I’ve had so many of those this year. I’m so grateful for my beautiful family and all that we do for each other, and I’m thankful for my days and nights spent with my family as theres no greater comfort. Admidst all of this, I’ve learnt how lucky I am to have all that I have. With some terrible things going on around the world, I think everyone has taken a step back and reflected upon their lives. It’s important to show awareness for those that are less fortunate but also try your hardest to be a good person to others. People will always remember the things you do for them so I want to make sure that I am doing as much as I can for others.

Have patience

I have always believed that everything happens for a reason. All the opportunities that come your way, all the people that walk in and out of your life and all the things that happen that make you realise that it’s a small world and really make you believe that there is purpose for everything. This year in particular, I have learnt that absolutely everything happens for a reason, even if it means feeling some pain to gain something much better in the long run. This year I got my dream job and I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity, but it really shows that hard work pays off and you don’t have to be the brightest bulb in the pack to get what you want and the jobs you want. You have to exert yourself and be the best you can be, have perseverance, have faith and have patience. Even with relationships, having patience is key here- things will happen when they are meant to happen, you just need to keep calm and wait your turn!

Collaborate and learn from others

Particularly in my professional life, I have met some incredible people this year. People that I can’t wait to continue learning from and working alongside. I realised I was hired for a reason and I am so ready to show what I can bring to my team and my role next year. I’m not a competitive person by nature and I’ve always believed that it is more important to work with someone or people than to work against them. You gain so many more valuable relationships and skills from working with others and I know for a fact that I will always remember those that have worked alongside me. I’m definitely a better person for it.

I’m so looking forward to what 2016 has to offer! I can’t wait to get stuck in and seize new opportunities. I’ve got some exciting plans for my blog, with a completely new look coming to Nimi Notes in 2016 and I’m so looking forward to sharing that! Thank you for reading Nimi Notes in 2015, it means a lot to me to have support for my blog, and watch this space for lots more in 2016.
